Over 175 civic leaders and community members gathered on January 28th at the Denver Art Museum to honor former Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives Terrance Carroll and Senator Pat Steadman at the Anti-Defamation League – Mountain States Region’s 33rd annual Civil Rights Awards Reception.

Terrance Carroll is a lawyer and ordained minister, and served as the 54th Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives – the first African-American to serve in this capacity. Speaker Carroll was honored by ADL for supporting education reform, the expansion of hate crimes laws and anti-discrimination laws, and a host of criminal justice reforms and civil rights issues during his eight-year tenure in the House.

Senator Pat Steadman has served in the Colorado State Senate since 2009. Steadman, an attorney, was recognized by ADL for his tireless efforts in working to oppose Colorado’s Amendment 2, a constitutional amendment that prohibited local governments from recognizing gays and lesbians as a protected class. As a proud ally, ADL has joined Steadman in fighting for rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Coloradans. In addition to championing civil rights, Steadman has worked extensively on criminal justice reform, reproductive rights, government accountability and school funding.

In recognizing Speaker Carroll and Senator Steadman, Scott L. Levin, Mountain States ADL Regional Director, remarked:

“Martin Luther King famously quoted from the Torah that we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like a river and righteousness like a mighty stream. I am so pleased we are able to recognize these two wonderful leaders and to know that their broad shoulders are those upon which others will stand for many years to come as we fight together to ensure justice for all.”

The annual Civil Rights Award Reception is an important event that supports the critical work ADL does every day fighting bigotry, racism and anti-Semitism; combating bias, bullying and hate through our No Place for Hate® initiative in Colorado schools; advocating for civil rights and religious freedom; training law enforcement and researching extremist groups; and responding to hate crimes and discrimination complaints. This year’s event was co-chaired by ADL Civil Rights Committee Chairs Stephen Burg, Daniel McKenzie, Melinda Quiat and Holly Stein Sollod.
