Dear Mayor Hancock:

On behalf of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), I write today to thank you for your compassionate response to the humanitarian situation along our nation’s border. We cannot turn a blind eye to the plight of thousands of children fleeing violence in their homelands. We support the City and County of Denver’s application for federal funds to house some of the children seeking asylum.

For more than 100 years, ADL has been advocating for fair and humane treatment of aspiring Americans and policies that honor our history as a nation of immigrants. We applaud your leadership in seeking temporary shelter for some of these children at the Family Crisis Center.

In the face of increasingly ugly anti-immigrant rhetoric that demonizes and dehumanizes these children fleeing violence, your willingness to take a stand and welcome them to Denver is all the more important. In opening Denver’s doors to unaccompanied minors, you have not only continued our nation’s great history of welcoming the downtrodden, but have set the standard today for treating these children with the dignity, respect, and compassion they deserve.

Sincerely,
