ADL Condemns Hateful Survey Distributed by Wyoming Educator; Calls for Student Respect and Inclusion

  • November 16, 2011

In response to the distribution of a homophobic and sexist survey to students by a Buffalo, Wyoming school guidance counselor and football coach, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed shock and disappointment that the educator betrayed his obligation to contribute to a respectful environment for students.  ADL also called upon the district and school administration to prioritize student respect and inclusion in all school affairs.

Reportedly, prior to a football game, the coach, Pat Lynch, distributed a survey to the players that asked them to identify reasons why their feelings were “hurt.” Options included, “I am a queer,” “I have woman like hormones,” and “I am a little b****.” The survey went on to explain that “diapers, midol and a ‘blanky’ can also be supplied.”  Recipients were also asked to fill out a section that prompted them to “name little sissy filing report” and provide a “girly-man signature.” The “person being accused” was to provide a “real-man signature” on the form.

Scott L. Levin, ADL Mountain States Regional Director, issued the following statement:

ADL is shocked and disappointed that football coach Pat Lynch, someone in a position of trust and authority, would belittle and dishonor his own students and football players with this homophobic, sexist survey. Educators have an obligation to teach respect for all students and to enforce a zero tolerance policy for the very hate that this survey condones. We further call upon the district and school administration to prioritize student respect and inclusion throughout Johnson district schools, so that all students will feel equally welcome and included.
