ADL Decries Hateful Radio Broadcasts by Greeley School Board Member

  • January 10, 2011

The Anti-Defamation League’s Mountain States Office today issued a statement decrying twice-daily radio broadcasts attacking Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., produced by a member of the Greeley-Evans District 6 School Board.  School Board member, Brett Reese, has been broadcasting a recording on his radio station two times a day in which he reads a letter attacking Dr. King.  Purportedly, the letter was sent to Mr. Reese by an anonymous listener three years ago.

ADL Regional Director Scott L. Levin issued the following statement:

“The Anti-Defamation League decries the recent twice-daily broadcasts by Brett Reese, an elected member of the Greeley-Evans District 6 School Board, spreading divisive and hateful misinformation about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Much of the material contained in Reese’s broadcast appears verbatim in websites run by extremists and white supremacists, including www.martinlutherking.org, a hate-filled website with links to Stormfront, a white supremacist website whose motto is “White Pride, World Wide,” and David Duke, one of America’s most well-known racists and anti-Semites.  Information on Stormfront and David Duke can be found at www.adl.org.

The reckless and irresponsible spread of such misleading vitriol only heightens the divisions in our communities at a time when we should be finding ways to diminish, not increase, hateful rhetoric in public debate.  We call upon Mr. Reese to desist from his divisive public broadcasts and to instead focus on strengthening public education and respecting the diversity of Weld County.”
