ADL Opposes Bill that Inserts Definition of Personhood in Colorado Law

  • April 22, 2015

Denver, CO, April 22, 2015…The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) testified today in opposition to a bill that would improperly insert a religious definition of life in state law, endanger women’s access to important medical services, and allow prosecution for abortion services and potentially miscarriages. The legislation, Senate Bill 268, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 3-2 vote.

ADL Mountain States Regional Director Scott L. Levin issued the following statement:

Once again, Colorado lawmakers are attempting to redefine person and insert a religious definition of life in state law. This bill goes against the will of Colorado voters who have overwhelmingly rejected personhood three times. The bill also provides inadequate legal protections for pregnant women and their doctors. This bill is dangerous for Colorado women and doctors and should not become law.

Colorado Senate President Bill Cadman sponsored Senate Bill 268. A bill introduced earlier in the legislative session that would have also defined personhood in Colorado law was defeated in a House committee.
