The ADL Mountain States Region maintained its focus this past month on public policy changes to help secure houses of worship and to counter the many extremist threats in our region.
ADL celebrated Governor Jared Polis signing into law House Bill 1077, the Colorado Nonprofit Security Grant Program, on June 7. The law creates a grant program within the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to further enhance the physical security of Colorado’s faith-based and charitable organizations that are deemed at high risk of homegrown and domestic violent extremist threats. ADL worked closely with the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and a coalition of nearly 100 nonprofit and religious institutions across the state to pass this critical legislation. The bill’s prime sponsors were Rep. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, Rep. Iman Jodeh, Sen. Chris Hansen and Sen. Kevin Priola.
Last week, ADL Mountain States leaders from New Mexico and Colorado met with lawmakers to discuss a variety of critical issues, including: countering domestic terrorism, securing houses of worship and nonprofit organizations that are vulnerable to violent threats, and preventing and responding to hate crimes.
Leaders met with representatives of the following offices: U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (CO), U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM), U.S. Senator Ben Ray Lujan (NM) and U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (NM).
