The Anti-Defamation League Mountain States Region was privileged to send Colonel Scott Hernandez, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, to ADL’s recent National Counter-Terrorism Seminar in Israel.
The Seminar brings together the highest levels of American law enforcement executives and commanders to Israel annually for a week of intensive counter-terrorism trainings. Briefings were provided by senior commanders in the Israel National Police, experts from Israel’s intelligence and security services, and the Israel Defense Forces.
Colonel Hernandez shared his experiences from the training at ADL’s National Commission meeting in Denver in October. He said the trip challenged him to improve the Colorado State Patrol’s relationship with the broader community. In particular, he said the trip reminded him how important it is for the Colorado State Patrol to renew its education efforts in the community.
“We can do better in our community education and outreach, in relationship building, and in designing education programs that are age-appropriate,” Hernandez said. “The trip reminded me of how important it is to build trust between law enforcement and the community. I left with some ideas to bridge that gap.”
In addition, Hernandez said the trip was a rare opportunity to learn and grow with a small-group of colleagues from across the country.
“This trip forges ‘forever’ relationships,” Hernandez said. “The relationships range from friendships to opportunities to discuss and share ideas on what we want to change in our particular work settings.”
