On June 17, at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, nine people were murdered in a racially motivated attack intended to intimidate and divide.
For parents and educators looking for information about how to talk with young people about these horrific events, here are some resources from ADL’s Education Division which may be helpful.
- Discussing Hate and Violence with Children: A guide for educators and parents that provide the tools they need to help children confront hate effectively in the aftermath of hate violence or terrorism in their community.
- Empowering Children in the Aftermath of Hate: An ADL and National PTA brochure providing tips for adult family members and caregivers to effectively discuss issues related to hate and violence with children.
- Helping Students Make Sense of News Stories About Bias and Injustice: Strategies and resources for talking with students about important stories in the news about bias and injustice.
- The Question Corner: Answers to frequently asked questions about bias for early childhood professionals and parents/family members.
In addition, the Anti-Defamation League has many resources that may be helpful to different faith communities who are feeling vulnerable and in need of better security in the wake of the this attack. Because of ADL’s commitment to and expertise in Jewish institutional security, we have created resources for all faith communities on issues of safety and security, while helping institutions to maintain open and welcoming environments. These should be useful for any communal organization grappling with issues in the wake of this tragic event.
