The Anti-Defamation League Mountain States Region is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2018 Civil Rights Awards. The recipients are Lauren Y. Casteel, Stan Garnett and Governor Ralph Carr (posthumously). The 2018 Civil Rights Awards Reception will take place from 5:30-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in Mitchell Hall at the Denver Botanic Gardens.
Lauren Y. Casteel is President and CEO of The Women’s Foundation of Colorado. She is the first person in Colorado to lead three foundations and possesses more than 20 years of philanthropic leadership. She has worked tirelessly to build inclusive communities for all Coloradans across gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, ability status and sexual orientation.
Stan Garnett was elected as the District Attorney for Boulder County in November, 2008. During his tenure as District Attorney, Garnett has focused efforts on prosecuting economic crimes, crimes in the immigrant and homeless communities, as well as hate crimes. Garnett currently serves as President of the Colorado District Attorneys’ Council.
Governor Ralph Carr welcomed Japanese Americans who were evicted from their homes in the western United States to Colorado in 1942 where they were eventually resettled in internment camps. Camp Amache, near Granada, Colorado, was home to almost 10,000 evacuees. Carr’s petitions for racial tolerance and protection of the constitutional rights of Japanese Americans are generally thought to have cost him his political career.
