  • May 4, 2009

On April 29, 2009, the Mountain States Office of ADL presented its 2009 Torch of Liberty Award to three remarkable families who are “Passing the Torch” of community service and leadership from one generation to the next. ADL honored

  • Sen. Rollie and Josephine Heath passing the torch to Joel, Stratton and Kristin Heath;
  • Bob Peña and Anna Wickard passing the torch to Theresa and Craig Peña; and
  • Harry and Victoria Sterling passing the torch to Liz and Sam Aybar, Fran and Elissa Sterling and Lauren Sussman.

Over 300 people attended the event including many distinguished guests representing state and local government, community and art organizations, and religious and educational institutions. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper introduced the families by recognizing their leadership and impact on their communities.

ADL Mountain States Regional Director Bruce DeBoskey, said “The three remarkable families we are here to honor tonight decided long ago that their deep commitment and passion for social justice, civil rights, and fair treatment for all would be values that they hoped their children would inherit. And, when you look at the next generation of these families’ torch bearers, you will see the truly inspiring work that each of them is doing right now, to make our communities better and safer and more just for all who live here. And that is what these families, this evening and the Anti-Defamation League are dedicated to achieving.”
