Registration is open for our next ADL Central Division Speaker Series Webinar: The “Great Replacement Theory”: The Anti-Immigrant Movement Goes Mainstream, being held on Tuesday, April 19 at 11:30 am MT. Register here.
Once largely relegated to white supremacist rhetoric, the “Great Replacement” theory has made its way into mainstream consciousness in the past several years.
This conspiracy theory is rooted in claims that white Europeans and Americans are being “replaced” by Black and Brown immigrants. Most recently, these fears have been stoked by backlash against President Biden’s immigration policies and response to the Afghan, Haitian, and Central American refugee crisis, which Great Replacement acolytes believe represents a strategic and purposeful effort to change the demographics of the United States. These claims bolster anti-immigrant rhetoric and hate, while promoting racist, xenophobic, and anti-Muslim tropes that invigorate the extreme right.
Learn from the experts about the origins of this theory, how it has found its way into mainstream rhetoric, and the practical impact that it has had on immigration policy – including the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees.
