ADL Leaders Featured on “Overthrowing Education” Podcast

  • January 19, 2022

The podcast Overthrowing Education explores pressing issues in education with entertaining explanations and solutions-oriented discussions. The biweekly podcast is presented by the Areté Institute and hosted by Batsheva Frankel, daughter of Shelly Steinhauser, ADL Regional Director emeritus. Each episode features an interview with a knowledgeable guest regarding the elements of education about which they’re most passionate. To balance serious subject matter with a playful tone, every episode begins with a “fauxmercial”: a parodic commercial for imaginary educational products that we wish were real. While primarily intended for educators, administrators, students and their parents, this podcast is perfect for anyone interested in exploring how revolutionary changes to our educational system can improve the state of education today.

Last month, Overthrowing Education featured Tara Raju, ADL Mountain States’ own Educational Director, in conversation with Frankel about fostering inclusive and empathetic educational environments. The discussion highlighted how ADL’s No Place for Hate Program helps schools promote tolerance in order to combat discrimination and implicit bias. The episode also addressed how individuals who lack institutional support can lead their communities in eliminating prejudice. To reduce the inequities in our educational spaces, we must allow students to take the lead and encourage adults to support their efforts throughout.

In an earlier episode, the podcast presented a conversation between Frankel and her sister, Karen Steinhauser, that likewise centered on strategies for countering implicit bias in our schools. Working to create more equitable educational opportunities requires all of us to acknowledge the biases we find within ourselves and within our communities.
