ADL Mountain States welcomes the community to participate in its regional (virtual) fundraiser challenge, If Not, Now, When?
We are privileged to honor beloved civil rights hero and ADL leader, Sheldon (Shelly) Steinhauser. Shelly is no stranger to “fighting the good fight.” In March of 1965, the late John Lewis and many others were badly beaten on “Bloody Sunday” as they tried to cross the Edmund Pettus bridge out of Selma. Shelly Steinhauser was among those who answered Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s call for people of all creeds, colors and religions to march with him two weeks later into Montgomery.
Shelly has created a legacy as a civil rights activist by walking the walk. Throughout his life and varied careers, Shelly has dreamed of a better world for all and has been prepared to do something about it. Fifty-five years ago, he linked arms with other civil rights activists from all corners of the nation. To this day, Shelly has demonstrated during the most tumultuous times that the fight for civil rights belongs to us all. As our sage Hillel said millennia ago:
If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
If I am only for myself, what am I?
You, too, can walk the walk—by continuing to stand up for what’s right, speaking out against the unjust treatment of others and showing that you won’t give up until equality exists for all. Will you take those steps with us?
Next week, you’ll have your chance—from Monday, August 24 through Thursday, August 27 at 7pm (MT), we will celebrate and honor the 90th birthday and legacy of Shelly Steinhauser, a truly iconic hero, with a 90-hour fundraising challenge, If Not Now, When? You can participate in this challenge by donating and helping our region meet our goal.
Here’s the good news: Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar through a $90,000 match from sponsors of If Not Now, When? Please watch your email next week for links to donate. Additional details regarding the fundraiser will be distributed via email and on ADL Mountain States’ social media (Facebook, Twitter).
Like Shelly, we invite you to walk the walk to achieve equality. We may have many bridges to cross—but we know were strongest when we come together and fight for what is right. As Shelly demonstrated all those years ago, it cannot be done alone, but together, linked arm in arm, we can—and will—change the world.
